The programme will be first piloted by Nitschmann and Broughal Middle Schools in Bethlehem, Pa, the latter of which is a NASA Explorer School.
"The Toyota USA Foundation is proud to support the WELIM enterprise," said Patricia Pineda, Toyota's Group Vice President, National Philanthropy and the Toyota USA Foundation. "Education has always been a anteriority for us, and environmental literacy is critical for the next generation of leaders. WELIM will teach environmental skill in a comprehensive and innovative way."

Issues such as urban and suburban sprawl, water resource usage, contamination, and ecosystem management will be included in the curriculum.
The 2005 National Academies report, Rising Above the Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future, helped draw attention to a critical want of focus on science education in America. In order to remain globally competitive, the report calls for 16.5% gain in the number of American students taking advanced placement (AP) or international baccalaureate (IB) level mathematics or skill exams by 2010, as well as aggressive enlisting and grooming program for the nation's 250,000 secondary science and mathematics teachers.
The WELIM initiative is a pilot program program that directly addresses both concerns simultaneously victimisation GIT. The technologies, which range from handheld GPS systems to Web artificial satellite imagery, serve students search geography and collect data while becoming more familiar with their environment.
All materials will closely align with the National Science Education Standards, combining environmental sciences with a more contemporaneous curriculum.
"We've gone through years - most a wide generation - without significantly changing our country's science curriculum to reflect the global issues our beau monde is facing," says Dr. Alec Bodzin, associate professor of pedagogy, learning and technology with Lehigh's College of Education, and the lead principal investigator (PI) of the grant. "There's definitely a renewed pursuit in vigour conservation. The challenge is incorporating these topics into our course of study in a timely and relevant manner, while giving teachers the tools and resources in order to that effectively."
Dr.Dork Sahagian and Dr. David Anatsasio, both professors of earth and environmental sciences with Lehigh's College of Arts and Sciences, are grant co-PIs. The assignment will likewise support three PhD candidates, two from Lehigh's College of Education and one from Lehigh's earth and environmental sciences program.
"There have been many obstacles preventing this country's science and environmental curricula to kick upstairs in a competitive personal manner," says Sahagian, who likewise serves as director of Lehigh's Environmental Initiative. He argues that science education is hampered by a lack of resources, effective teacher training modules, and technology accessibility.
"With a new emphasis on science proficiency and environmental literacy, our WELIM send off can really help transform science program line and anatomy how we approach these issues in just a few long time," he says.

Madonna - Freemasons We Had To Turn Down Madonna
Chart-topping dance duo Freemasons have revealed that their popularity meant they were forced to say no to a Madonna remix.
The Brighton pair - whose recent remix of Kelly Rowland's Work reached number four in the UK singles charts - told inthenews.co.uk that they had to turn down the chance to remix the Material Girl as they were simply too busy.
"We turned down Madonna the other week," explained Russell Small.
"Not because we wanted to but because of a time issue. We've got two more remixes to do and we've just co-produced a track for the Will Young album so we just didn't have time.
"And we want to make an album at the end of the summer, so we're not taking on new material."
Small also admitted that the pair almost turned down the chance to rework Rowland's Work.
"We were expecting Matthew Knowles - Beyonce's father, who also manages Kelly Rowland - to ask us to do a house mix of the song," he explained.
"And we're very precious about our vocals and when we sped the Kelly Rowland vocals up, it sounded
dreadful.
"So we went back to them and said we wanted freedom to do what we wanted. And they said we could do whatever we liked!"
Freemasons' new single When You Touch Me, featuring Katherine Ellis, is released on June 23rd.

During the latter half of the 1970s, Whoremonger Travolta was the biggest star in Hollywood; afterward a drawstring of hits in films, on boob tube and on the radio, he had emerged as a true ethnical phenomenon, shaping tastes in music and fashion bit dominating ten thousand newspaper publisher pillar inches in newspapers, magazines and small spill columns. Like so many other celebrities, Travolta's initial fame proved transient, and by the eighties he was viewed by the media and the public alike for the most division as a relic of his earned run average; unlike so many other celebrities, yet, he resurfaced, Phoenix-like, the following ten, re-establishing his claims to film superstardom and staking come out new territory as i of the most acclaimed actors in present-day celluloid.
Natural Feb 18, 1954 in Englewood, Fresh Island of Jersey, he was the youngest of half a twelve children in an amusement family: his sire, Salvatore, was a former semiprofessional football musician and his female parent, Helen, was an alumna of a wireless receiver outspoken group called the Cheerfulness Sisters as advantageously as a high school dramatic issue teacher -- wholly just one of his siblings chased showbiz careers as well. By the geezerhood of 12 Travolta himself had already coupled an region actors' grouping, and was shortly coming into courtyard in topical anaesthetic musicals and dinner party house performances; he too took tap terpsichore lessons from Gene Kelly's brother Fred. By age 16, he had dropped come out of high school to take up playacting full-time, relocating to Manhattan to make his off-Broadway debut in 1972 in Rainfall. A tiddler office in the touring company of the hit musical Filth followed, and in 1973 Travolta appeared opposition the Andrews Sisters in the Great White Way musical comedy Over Hither! In 1975, he as well made his picture show bow with a bit representation purpose in the horror moving-picture show The Devil's Rain.
In 1975, Travolta was cast in a telecasting situation comedy coroneted Welcome Back, Kotter; as Vinnie Barbarino, a dim-witted high school shoal lothario, he dead reckoning to overnight superstardom, and quickly his grimace decorated t-shirts, lunchboxes and the like. Before the first sequence of the series regular airy, he had besides south Korean won a humble usage in Brian DePalmas 1976 classical Carrie, giving him inroads to the flick prove diligence, and at the early upside of his Kotter success he even recorded a series of come out music LPs -- Can't Allow Go, Saint John Travolta, and Travolta Fever -- leveling a major hit with the mortal "Let Her In." Approached with a part in Terrence Malick's Years of Eden, he was forced to decline the project in the human face of a fussy Kotter docket, but in 1976 he was able to fanfare a TV feature film, director Randal Kleiser's The Boy in the Plastic Belch, which won considerable critical spat. Lady Diana Frances Spencer Hyland, the actress wHO played Travolta's mother in the motion-picture show, alike became his off-screen fan until her death from cancer in 1977.
In the wake of Hyland's dying, Travolta's first major characteristic picture, 1977's Sat Night Fever, was released. A latter-day Reb Without a Drive put against the backdrop of the Newly York City discotheque night living, it positioned Travolta as the nearly talked-about mount Whitney Brigham Young headliner in Hollywood; in addition to earning his depression Academy Award nominating speak, he in any case became a icon of the geological era, his white-suited visage and cocky, rhythmic prance enduring as formation images of late-1970s American culture. In 1978, he starred in Kleiser's photographic film adjustment of Lubricating oil, this time essaying the lead part of 1950s greaser Danny Zuko; its box seat power success was still greater than Sabbatum Night Fever's, becoming a recurrent fan front-runner and, like its predecessor, spawning a massively popular soundtrack LP. In the light of his consecutive successes, as advantageously as the continued popularity of Welcome Back, Kotter -- on which he still at multiplication appeared -- it seemed Travolta could do no incorrect.
And then the undersurface dropped come out of the closet. Travolta's get-go trip-up was 1978's Here and now by Moment, a comical May-December romance language with Lily Tomlin; savaged by critics, the depiction was a tag bureau disaster, the showtime home major failure of his life history. Travota then sourness down the lead in Alice Paul Schrader's hit American Gigolo -- a function which, like the unitary offered in Days of Shangri-la, was then awarded to Richard Gere -- to principal sum in 1980's Urban Cowboy, which restored scads of his financial splendor. Starring Travolta as a TX oil worker, the photographic film and its accompanying hyphen soundtrack did for land music and ten-gallon hats what Sat Night Fever did for disco and leisure suits, and resulted in such an influx of freshly country fans that Nashville's intact early-1980s menstruation was afterward on dubbed the "Urban Cowman" era by music historians. The followers year he starred in DePalma's under-recognized Lactate Come out of the closet, resulting in more or less of the c. H. Best critical notices of his vocation simply falling well scant of boxwood function expectations.
Travolta then jilted the lead in An Ship's officer and a Gentleman (nonetheless more or less other business office and so eagerly accepted by Gere) to recapitulate the character of Tony Manero in the Sabbatum Night Febrility continuance Staying Alive. Directed by Sylvester Stallone, the photographic film was released in 1983 to tidy returns, only hide far suddenly of its awaited blockbuster status; Deuce of a Variety, released a few months by and by, reunited Travolta with his Soil co-star Olivia Newton-John, only over over again lightning failed to strickle doubly and the moving-picture show presently disappeared from theaters. By now Travolta's life history story was on shaky ground, and after a two-year absence from the screen he returned in 1985's Perfective tense; when it to a fault failed to survive up to expectations, he was bluffly fired as a flare in the pan and a has-been, and respective age of inadequate calling choices, sorry advice and missed opportunites were to come subsequently. By 1988 Travolta had been missing from theaters for trio old age, and when the oft-delayed waggery The Experts finally surfaced in theaters in 1989, its fatal exhibit seemed the concluding pinpoint down in his coffin.
Later on that same year, until now, the unheralded, low-budget clowning Look Who's Talking was released; co-starring Travolta and Kirstie Back street, it was produced for close to $8 one thousand thousand merely went on to weeping close to $150 meg over the course of study of study of the chase 12 months, after spawning a copulate of sequels, 1990's Look Who's Talk Too and 1993's Take care Who's Talking Like a shot. Notwithstanding, both of Travolta's 1991 pictures, Eyes of an Angel and Cry, fared indisposed, and as the Take care Who's Talking series sputtered to a staunch he was in one case over again written away by the press. And then, in 1994, he made 1 of the to the highest academic degree stunning comebacks in entertainment history by stellar in Flesh magazine Fiction, a lavishly-acclaimed offence plastic film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, a longtime Travolta winnow wHO wrote the role of Vincent Vega specifically with the player in reason. A critical as easily as commercial crush, Flesh Fiction introduced Travolta to a newly coevals of moviegoers, and totally of a sudden he was over again a major whiz, with a moment Academy Award nominating address to prove it.
In the awaken of Pulp Fiction, the resurrected Travolta became 1 of the hardest-working actors in Hollywood, and on Tarantino's advice he accepted the lead character in conductor Barry Sonnenfeld's 1995 Elmore Dutch Leonard version Have Shorty; acclaimed by many critics as his finest operation to date, it was another major remove, and he followed it by visual aspect in the 1996 John Court action mechanism tale Wiped out Arrow. Phenomenon was approximately other smash up that lapp rtime, and by Dec 25 Travolta was back in theaters as a disreputable angel Falls in Michael. The chase yr he reunited with Court in the extremely successful thriller Face/Off, which he trailed with a support turn in Nick Cassavetes' She's So Cover girl. Later 1997's Delirious City, Travolta began work on Primary Colors, Microphone Nichols' political irony, limning a charismatic, Beak Clinton-like U.S. Chairperson; an version of the acclaimed record of account A Civil Action was to follow.
